Three Logistics Layers: A Framework for Hospital Material Transport

Walk through most hospitals today and you will still find staff pushing carts loaded with sterile surgical instruments, IV fluids, and bulk medications. This category of materials has rarely been treated as a candidate for automation. Pneumatic tube systems handle the small urgent items; everything else gets pushed by hand.


That gap is larger than it looks.



One Pattern, Many Hospitals


MCBS has worked in hospital intralogistics for over a decade across facilities in different countries. Despite differences in size and layout, the same pattern recurs: mid-weight, high-frequency materials moving between pharmacies, operating theatres, ICUs, and wards are still transported manually — not because automation is unavailable, but because no one has framed this as a problem worth solving.


Hospital materials differ in weight, urgency, and infection control requirements. Managing them with the same operational logic produces inefficiencies that accumulate quietly. The Three Logistics Layers framework matches each material category to the transport solution suited to it.


Layer 1: Small-Item Transport

Materials:Samples, medications, documents 

Capacity: 3KG/ 3 L 

Solution: SmaTube (PTS)


Speed over short distances for lightweight, time-critical items. Well established and widely deployed.



Layer 2: Mid-Load Transport

Materials:Sterile surgical instruments, IV fluids, blood bags, bulk medications 

Capacity: 30 kg / 46.5 L 

Solution: SmaTruck (ATVS)


This is the layer most hospitals have not yet addressed.


These materials are heavy enough that manual transport is physically demanding, frequent enough that the time cost is significant, and critical enough that delays affect patient care directly. Sterile instruments, IV restocking, blood bag transfers — these are not edge cases. They are routine daily workflows in every hospital.


When this layer is handled efficiently, clinical staff spend less time on material handling. Procedures move on schedule. Results arrive faster. The patient experience improves as a direct consequence.



Layer 3: Bulk Transport

Materials:Meals, soiled linen, medical waste 

Capacity: 200 kg / 189 L or higher

Solution: SmaVan (AGV) or SmaSort (AWLS)


High-volume, lower-urgency flows requiring strict separation from clean zones.
